This Washington Post article says that the PC price wars may have throttled computer makers' R&D programs to the point where there are few reasons to buy a new PC, other than replace a broken one. Apparently, faster and cheaper is no longer enough to cause sales. PC penetration in U.S. households has remained stuck at around 60 percent for the past year, and things do not look good for the PC industry this holiday season. While some were expecting that Windows XP would jumpstart PC sales, there is little evidence that is happening (although Microsoft may force the move by ceasing to support Windows 95 after December 31). Most PC innovations right now are in the form of packaging and special pricing deals, and the only real functional advance on the horizon is DVD writing.
