Anoto has developed gesture recognition technology that is built directly into a digital pen (PDF) that is equipped with a Bluetooth transceiver. The scheme uses special paper that is printed with a dense pattern that consists of very small dots slightly displaced from a grid structure. As you write or draw on the paper with a digital pen, the pen creates a digital trace of whatever you do. This information is stored in the pen until you tick a "Magic box". The information is then forwarded from the pen directly to a nearby computer or by a Bluetooth device (such as a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone). Some of the suggested applications include transfer of information from paper analog calendars to the digital equivalent in a computer, sending e-mails, SMS and faxes just by using pen and paper, and storing hand-written notes for backup or further processing. The company is licensing its technology to a few dozen partners, including Franklin Covey, which plans to digitally enable its paper-based Franklin Planners, and several pen companies, including Mead, Montblanc, and Pilot.
