ChatCircles2 is a graphical chat room developed at the MIT Media Lab that represents participants using geometric forms and color to convey social presence and activity. Every user has a "hearing range", and they can only see the messages of users who are inside their hearing range, i.e. users who are visually close on the screen. The background is punctuated with the most popular images from Google. They are updated frequently, introducing topics for conversation and helping to define the space as a social environment. ChatCircle2 also keeps a graphical log of conversations in the chatroom, showing each user's activity as a set of lines over time. Here is a gallery of screen shots.
