This article in the New York Times (free registration required) describes Spring, a desktop environment for OS X that is optimized for basic Internet activities like communication and shopping. To accomplish most tasks, users draw lines between icons that represent hypertext objects. For example, to book a flight, the user would open a canvas with a map, and drag a line between the two cities. To invite someone to a place, the user would drag a line between the icons representing the person and the place. Once a line is drawn to connect the objects, Spring offers a pop-up menu of options that are appropriate for the connection, i.e. "book a flight" or "send an invitation". Here is a FAQ describing Spring's design, and here are some screenshots.
