Slashdot picked up on Croquet, sparking yet another debate about whether 3D user interfaces offer any improvements over existing 2D interfaces. This paper (PDF) from the University of Canterbury (NZ) describes a comparative evaluation of two document management systems that differ only in the number of dimensions used for displaying and interacting with the data. The 3D system is based on Microsoft's Data Mountain (PDF) interface, which uses a 3D representation of documents such as bookmarked web-pages. The study found that subjects were faster at storing and retrieving pages in the display when using the 2D interface, but not significantly so. Moreover, subjective assessments showed that test subjects greatly preferred using the 3D interface.
