Ambient Devices Gaining Momentum
posted by Editor on Tuesday June 10, @03:58PM
Advanced Peripherals This article in the NY Times (free registration required) reports that the Ambient Orb from Ambient Devices has been chosen by Brookstone as a featured Father's Day gift in all of its stores and in its catalog. Ambient's vision is to embed information in everyday objects such as lights, pens, watches, walls and wearables. The idea is to shift information from the center of a user's attention to the fringes, allowing people to deal with information at a pace and at a moment they are comfortable with, rather than contending with the information overflow that is sometimes inherent in traditional computing devices. The default configuration for the Ambient Orb shows the Dow Jones stock market average, glowing more green or red to indicate market movement up or down, or yellow when the market is calm. Some other Ambient applications on the horizon are using pinwheels to spin faster or slower, depending on how well a particular sales team is doing compared with other teams; monitoring hit rates of a Web site, and using orbs as displays for pollen count to remind customers when to take allergy drugs.
