This article in New Scientist describes Gummi, a handheld computing device that users interact with by twisting. The device combines a rigid LCD with sensors and a touch pad that are mounted in a flexible acrylic plastic block. Users manipulate the device by flexing the board and using the touch-sensitive pad to control the content (see picture). The developers have created several applications for the device, including a map, web browser, photo album, a simple game and a text input system. Sony expects to produce prototypes of credit-card sized devices in about three years that can use this technique for tasks such as zooming in and out of a map, controlling the playback speed of video files and editing the composition of image layers.
