Regional accents continue to represent a significant challenge for some speech recognition software. This article from CNN reports that the Shreveport, Louisiana, police department is switching back to a touch-tone based phone system for routing callers to individual extensions because the speech-based system that had been used previously was unable to recognize callers with a "lazy mouth".
