SegusoLand Interface Guides Users By Narrowing Options
posted by Editor on Monday February 09, @08:38PM
User Interface Innovation Ned Baldessin writes "Maurizio Colucci has created an interesting desktop environment, built upon 5 parameters: actions (called verbs), files, applications, physical devices, and history (or time). The user combines these parameters to narrow down to a task, a file, a device, etc. The site has many screenshots and examples. The concept is somewhat abstract, and probably could be extended to other parameters/columns, like People, Locations, Projects, etc. This, as usual, brings us to the problem of creating relevant metadata." SegusoLand uses an artificial intelligence technique "reciprocal list narrowing" that shows users only the relevant options while they are composing an action. It claims to be the first interface that combines task-oriented (i.e. verb-oriented), file-oriented, device-oriented, and program-oriented paradigms in a single model.

Right click on a file and choose "Open With..." and you are presented with a list of programs you've used to open that file type in the past.

I really like this idea since I can start a process from the file itself rather than having to think about which application I want first. This means I can work a lot faster and do a whole lot more starting from the file manager.

My only criticism of segusoLand would be that it it's a seperate application. Without the functionality integrated in a file manager I think it becomes less useful. Great idea, though.

I think all this right click on a file and choose (open with) can be made alot easy if we make it a part of the file program. segusoLand my criticism is that if we let people know they do have and can use this with file manager and other application.I bet if we took a poll on who know how to find it and use it. We would see somethink like 25% yes 75%would say no lets think.

... but I like the general idea as long as I can treat it as a supplement to the command line power and key-combos that are my current interface paradim I don't see how it could hurt.
This is more than just a program launcher (Score:0)

Previous posts have focussed on just program launching. The real principle behind this is finding and manipulating data. If this included people you would be able to schedule appointments/events easily and manage different groups of people over multiple communication media (SMS, email, phone etc.) far better than current PIMS. If this included previous times in its time list you'd be able to have extended undos, and be able to find that file / email you were working on last week! For those that think a cmd line is more flexible, a cmd line example would be that you can pipe data from one prog to another, BUT you would need to check the helpfile to see what format the data needs to be in as cmd line commands have specific parameters. Does this sound familiar to segusoland? (red arrows denote parameters to be specified). I think the answer is that segusoland is only as limited as the filetypes descriptive ability. Alexis Read In linux this description is poor, but that's no reason to knock the principle of segusoland -> narrowing menus.
