BREW and Java Continue Battling For Mobile Phone Application Developers
posted by Editor on Monday August 23, @05:36PM
Development Resources This article in SD Times reports that the battle for mobile phone application developers between Qualcomm's BREW and Sun's Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) is far from over. A new study by Zelos Group predicts that 90 percent of the mobile devices shipping in the next five years will contain either BREW or Java, but that both platforms need improvements before they fully address market needs. Zelos criticizes Qualcomm for failing to provide BREW developers with a clear road map for its future, charging that the company is confused about whether BREW should be an OS, a device management system, or a services gateway. The report predicts that that Java will remain the dominant platform in terms of installed base, but that its dominance will not be sufficient to create a viable software market. J2ME needs to be more than a client technology, but has to be able to do something, which a lot of early iterations of J2ME didn't. Sun believes that this may be corrected with the second release of Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP), a complete runtime environment for cell phones and PDAs.
